Now that you have gotten your new tattoo, follow these instructions to ensure optimal healing and prolong the longevity of your tattoo.

  • Within one to three hours after getting your tattoo remove the bandage and tape.

  • Lather unscented, anti-bacterial liquid soap (Dial works well) with hot water in your hands and gently rub the tattoo in circular motions with your fingers. Make sure to remove any excess ointment, blood, and ink. Do not use any abrasive washcloth or loofah while cleaning your fresh tattoo.

  • After your tattoo is completely clean, let air dry for five to ten minutes before applying a THIN layer of Aquaphor Healing Ointment. Excessive use of ointment can suffocate the tattoo and cause ink loss and scabbing.

  • After about a week or once the top layer of skin on the tattoo starts to flake off you may switch to using a plain, unscented hand lotion on your tattoo instead of Aquaphor.

  • Repeat the washing and moisturizing process 2-3 times per day for the first two to three weeks or until your tattoo is healed.

  • No heavy sun exposure, submersion in water for long periods of times (swimming, bathing, and hot tubs), scratching or picking at your tattoo until it is completely healed and settled in.

  • Everyone’s skin is different, but your tattoo should be healed within 2-4 weeks.

Some important things to consider while your tattoo is fresh and healing

  • It is highly likely that your tattoo will seep for up to the first 24 hours after getting it done, if it gets stuck to any clothing or bedding make sure to dampen the cloth with warm water and gently slide off of the tattoo.

  • Excess ink being secreted from the surface of the tattoo is normal for the first few days, just gently wash it off to help prevent scabbing.

  • Some scabbing is normal and expected. Certain areas may scab more than others and even bruise.

  • DO NOT PICK AT OR SCRATCH YOUR NEW TATTOO.

  • Always wash your hands before cleaning or touching your new tattoo.

  • Fresh bedding, towels, and clothing are very important while your tattoo is fresh.

  • Showering is fine, just no submerging the tattoo underwater until healed.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing while your tattoo is fresh. Avoid constrictive clothing that rubs against the tattoo as it can create healing problems.

  • For the first few days your tattoo will be sore and hot to the touch. Swelling and redness are also common.

  • While healing, your tattoo may be itchy around a week in. You may apply light pressure to the area to relieve it.

  • After your tattoo is healed, it is highly recommended to use sunscreen of at least 50 SPF or higher anytime you will be in the sun to keep your tattoo looking fresh and bright for years to come.
